How to apply

First you should obtain a quotation for the electricity supply from the local SSE depot (or other authorised agent). The supply must be for a connection to a domestic property or a community project. It can be for a new property or to upgrade an existing supply.

Eligibility conditions

  • The property must be for domestic use or a community project which is not profit distributing.
  • Domestic properties must be the sole residence of the applicant.
  • Full planning permission, where required, must have been granted before an application is submitted.
  • Applicants should be a member of the local community.
  • Applications relating to connections or upgrades for renewable energy installations will be considered.
  • Applicants are required to provide detailed information on the costs, funding and purpose of their project.
  • Applicants are required to provide information about their financial status. The Trustees may seek to verify the information provided. It is also very important the following information is provided:
    • HOUSEHOLD INCOME: Gross annual household income should include spouse/partner in addition to the applicant.
    • ASSETS (e.g. This should include the value of any land, property, motor vehicles, investments, savings, etc).
    • LIABILITIES (e.g. Include the value of any all outstanding loans, debts, etc).
    • FURTHER RELEVANT INFORMATION: Please explain why the Trustees should grant assistance in your case, reason for selecting the site, family background and circumstances and any other information you feel should be taken into consideration by the Trustees in considering your application. THE INFORMATION YOU GIVE IN THIS SECTION IS IMPORTANT SO THAT THE TRUSTEES CAN CONSIDER YOUR APPLICATION. IF INSUFFICIENT INFORMATION IS GIVEN IN THIS SECTION, THE APPLICATION CANNOT BE CONSIDERED".
  • The amount of grant offered will take account of what the Trustees consider to be a reasonable connection charge.
  • The Trustees will only consider applications from Community Trusts that are Registered Charities in Scotland for small scale housing projects in fragile rural communities.

Not Eligible to apply

  • No assistance can be given for connections to property which is used for a commercial or semi-commercial operation.
  • Applications solely for deviation works are outwith the remit of the Trust and will not be considered.
  • Applications for retrospective connections will not be considered.
  • Applications for holiday or second home will not be considered.

Oversubscription

The Scottish Hydro Electric Community Trust has been oversubscribed for the past three years. In the event of oversubscription the Trustees will prioritise awards to:

  • The most needy applicants for domestic properties.
  • Applications for Community projects showing the greatest benefit to the local community.

Levels of award

The level of award granted will be at the sole discretion of the Trustees. For domestic customers a grant of routinely up to 50% of the connection cost may be awarded. For community projects a grant of routinely between 50% and 75% may be awarded and the benefit to the community will influence the grant.

Application form

To apply for an award, please complete and submit our online application form. This is the easiest way to apply. The form will be received directly by the Trust Secretary.

The Trustees meet four times a year to consider applications. Your application must be received at least three weeks before a meeting. The meetings are normally held in January, March, June and September.

Award decision

You will be advised of the decision regarding your application as soon as possible after the Trustees' meeting at which your application was considered. The decision of the Trustees is final. Reasons for award decisions will not be disclosed and correspondence will not be entered into.
